What are Face Bricks?
Face bricks (facing bricks) are high-quality clay bricks used for visible exterior walls. They have a finished surface on one or more faces and require no rendering. Standard size yields approximately 55 units per m² including 10mm mortar joints.
Calculation Method
Net area = (Length × Height) - Openings
Bricks = Net area × 55 per m² × 1.07 (7% waste)
Worked Example
Facade 8m × 2.8m with 4m² openings:
- Gross area = 22.4 m²
- Net area = 18.4 m²
- Bricks = 18.4 × 55 × 1.07 = 1,083 bricks
- Mortar = 18.4 × 20 kg/m² = 368 kg
- Joint grout = 18.4 × 0.5 kg/m² = 9.2 kg
Common Mistakes
- Not accounting for higher waste (7%) due to face brick delicacy
- Not including special joint grout for exposed brickwork
- Not ordering extra bricks for cutting and pattern layout
- Mixing bricks from different batches (color variation)
Frequently Asked Questions
Standard face bricks (24×11.5×7cm): approximately 55 units per m² with 10mm mortar joints. Always verify with your specific brick dimensions.
Face bricks are more fragile than common bricks, and cuts must be clean for visible work. Also, pattern layouts (like Flemish bond) require more partial bricks.
