How to calculate a discount
Calculating a discount means finding how much money you save (the discount amount) and what final price you'll pay. It's an everyday calculation for sales, commercial negotiations, coupons, and special prices. It also lets you objectively compare whether a 30% discount on a $100 item is better or worse than a 20% discount on a $120 item.
Discount formulas
Discount amount = Original price × (Discount% / 100)
Final price = Original price × (1 − Discount% / 100)
Discount% = ((Original price − Final price) / Original price) × 100
Step-by-step example
A $185 coat has a 35% discount. What do you pay?
- Discount amount: 185 × 0.35 = $64.75
- Final price: 185 − 64.75 = $120.25 (or directly: 185 × 0.65 = $120.25)
Stacked discounts: first 20% off, then an extra 10%.
- After first discount: 185 × 0.80 = $148
- After second: 148 × 0.90 = $133.20
- Real total discount: (185 − 133.20) / 185 × 100 = 28% (not 30%)
Practical applications
- Sales and flash deals: Black Friday, seasonal sales, and outlet stores often combine multiple discount percentages — this calculator reveals the real total discount.
- B2B negotiation: Calculate the margin remaining after volume discounts agreed with suppliers.
- Comparing online offers: Check if the e-commerce "crossed out" price is truly cheaper than the competition.
- Distribution and margins: Calculate the retail price while maintaining your desired margin after channel discounts.
Common discount traps
- Inflated reference price: Some retailers raise the price before a sale to make the discount appear larger.
- Stacked discounts ≠ sum: 20% + 10% is not 30%; it's 28%. Always apply discounts sequentially.
- Pre-tax vs post-tax discount: Always check whether the discount applies to the price including or excluding VAT/sales tax.
- Total cost including shipping: A 40% discount plus expensive shipping may cost more than a competitor with free shipping.
