Cos'è il arithmetic mean?

The arithmetic mean (or average) is the value obtained by summing all data in a set and dividing by the count. It's the most widely used measure of central tendency in statistics, science, economics, and daily life.

Arithmetic mean formula

Mean (x̄) = (x₁ + x₂ + ... + xₙ) ÷ n

Where n is the number of values.

Practical example

Student grades in 5 tests: 7, 8, 6, 9, 5

  1. Sum: 7 + 8 + 6 + 9 + 5 = 35
  2. Mean: 35 ÷ 5 = 7.0

Mean, median, and mode: when to use each

  • Mean: Best for symmetric data without outliers.
  • Median: More robust against outliers (e.g., median income vs mean income).
  • Mode: For categorical data or most frequent values.

Types of mean

  • Arithmetic mean: Sum ÷ n (most common).
  • Weighted mean: Each value has a different weight.
  • Geometric mean: nth root of the product — used for growth rates.
  • Harmonic mean: For rates and speeds.
