Qu'est-ce que le arithmetic mean?
The arithmetic mean (or average) is the value obtained by summing all data in a set and dividing by the count. It's the most widely used measure of central tendency in statistics, science, economics, and daily life.

Mean (x̄) = (x₁ + x₂ + ... + xₙ) ÷ n
Where n is the number of values.
Practical example
Student grades in 5 tests: 7, 8, 6, 9, 5
- Sum: 7 + 8 + 6 + 9 + 5 = 35
- Mean: 35 ÷ 5 = 7.0
Mean, median, and mode: when to use each
- Mean: Best for symmetric data without outliers.
- Median: More robust against outliers (e.g., median income vs mean income).
- Mode: For categorical data or most frequent values.
Types of mean
- Arithmetic mean: Sum ÷ n (most common).
- Weighted mean: Each value has a different weight.
- Geometric mean: nth root of the product — used for growth rates.
