Cos'è unn age calculator?
The age calculator computes your exact age in years, months, weeks, and days from your date of birth to any reference date (today by default). Beyond a simple year count, it tells you the day of the week you were born, how many days remain until your next birthday, and your total age expressed in days, hours, or minutes — details that are surprisingly useful in legal, medical, and financial contexts.
While subtracting birth year from current year seems simple, an accurate age calculation must account for whether the birthday has passed yet this year, the variable lengths of months (28–31 days), and leap years. A manual calculation is error-prone; this calculator handles all edge cases automatically.
How exact age is calculated
The algorithm works in three steps:
- Year difference: Subtract the birth year from the current year to get a preliminary age.
- Birthday check: If today's month/day is before the birth month/day, subtract 1 (the birthday hasn't occurred yet this year).
- Days elapsed: Count the total calendar days from the birth date to today, accounting for leap years (366 days instead of 365).
The result in years is the legal age in most jurisdictions. The total days and hours figures are often surprising — a 30-year-old has lived more than 10,950 days.
Common uses
- Legal and administrative: Proving minimum age for driving, voting, drinking, retirement, or inheritance. Many official forms require age at a specific reference date, not today.
- Medical: Physicians use exact age (often to the day) when calculating dosages for children, assessing developmental milestones, or computing gestational age for newborns.
- Insurance: Premiums and eligibility thresholds depend on age at the policy's effective date, which can differ from today's date.
- Fitness and nutrition: Many formulas — BMR (basal metabolic rate), VO₂ max, maximum heart rate — use exact age in years as an input.
- Personal milestones: Find out what day of the week you were born, when you hit 10,000 days old, or how many hours you've been alive.
Age conventions around the world
Most Western countries count age from the birthday anniversary. However, conventions differ globally:
- South Korea (traditional system): Babies are born with age 1, and everyone gains a year on January 1st — so a baby born in December could be considered 2 years old just weeks after birth. South Korea officially moved to Western age counting in 2023 for legal and administrative purposes.
- East Asian lunisolar calendar: Some ceremonies and zodiac calculations use lunar birthday dates, which fall on different Gregorian calendar dates each year.
- Medical (gestational age): Premature infants are often assessed using "corrected age" — chronological age minus weeks of prematurity — to account for developmental milestones.
Domande frequenti
Change the "as of" date in the calculator to any date — past or future. This is useful for legal documents that require your age on a specific reference date (like a contract signing date or an exam cutoff date).
Leap years add an extra day every 4 years (with corrections for century years). Over 30 years, this adds roughly 7 extra days compared to a simple 30 × 365 = 10,950 calculation. The calculator counts actual calendar days, not estimated days.
Yes. The calculation matches the birthday-anniversary method used in most legal systems. For edge cases like being born on February 29th (leap day), most jurisdictions treat March 1st as the legal birthday in non-leap years — this calculator handles that convention correctly.
