The age calculator computes your exact age in years, months, weeks, and days from your date of birth to any reference date (today by default). Beyond a simple year count, it tells you the day of the week you were born, how many days remain until your next birthday, and your total age expressed in days, hours, or minutes — details that are surprisingly useful in legal, medical, and financial contexts.

While subtracting birth year from current year seems simple, an accurate age calculation must account for whether the birthday has passed yet this year, the variable lengths of months (28–31 days), and leap years. A manual calculation is error-prone; this calculator handles all edge cases automatically.

How exact age is calculated

The algorithm works in three steps:

1. Year difference: Subtract the birth year from the current year to get a preliminary age.
2. Birthday check: If today's month/day is before the birth month/day, subtract 1 (the birthday hasn't occurred yet this year).
3. Days elapsed: Count the total calendar days from the birth date to today, accounting for leap years (366 days instead of 365).

The result in years is the legal age in most jurisdictions. The total days and hours figures are often surprising — a 30-year-old has lived more than 10,950 days.

Age conventions around the world

Most Western countries count age from the birthday anniversary. However, conventions differ globally:

• South Korea (traditional system): Babies are born with age 1, and everyone gains a year on January 1st — so a baby born in December could be considered 2 years old just weeks after birth. South Korea officially moved to Western age counting in 2023 for legal and administrative purposes.
