Tip Calculator (Advanced): split the bill

This calculator helps you compute the appropriate tip, split the bill among several people and get the total per person, including the tip.

Tip formulas

The basic calculations are:

  • Tip: Tip = bill × tip_percentage
  • Total: Total = bill + tip
  • Per person: Per_person = total / number_of_people

Typical tip percentages vary: 10% (basic service), 15% (good service), 18-20% (excellent service).

Example 1: dinner for 4 people

Problem: Bill of $120, 18% tip, split among 4 people.

  1. Tip:
    • $120 × 0.18 = $21.60.
  2. Total:
    • $120 + $21.60 = $141.60.
  3. Per person:
    • $141.60 / 4 = $35.40.

Answer: Tip $21.60, total $141.60, $35.40 per person.

Example 2: quick lunch

Problem: Bill of $45, 15% tip, split between 2 people.

  1. Tip:
    • $45 × 0.15 = $6.75.
  2. Total:
    • $45 + $6.75 = $51.75.
  3. Per person:
    • $51.75 / 2 = $25.88.

Answer: Tip $6.75, total $51.75, $25.88 per person.

Häufige Anwendungsfälle

  • Computing restaurant tips quickly and fairly.
  • Splitting group bills at dinners and events.
  • Estimating total cost before asking for the bill.
  • Computing tips for delivery and taxi services.
  • Adjusting the tip based on service quality.
  • Planning budgets for dining out.

Common mistakes with tips

  • Computing the tip on the total with tax instead of the subtotal.
  • Not considering whether the tip is already included (common for large groups).
  • Rounding too much and giving less tip than deserved.
  • Forgetting that in some countries tipping is not expected.

Profi-Tipp

If the service was exceptional, consider rounding up. If the bill is $87 with a 20% tip ($17.40), rounding to $20 tip is appreciated by service staff.

Ideally on the subtotal before tax. However, many people compute on the total for simplicity.

In the US: 15-20% at restaurants. In Europe: 5-10% or round up. In Asia: tipping is generally not expected.

If the service was truly poor, you can reduce the tip. But consider whether the problem was with the restaurant or the server.

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, each person pays what they consumed plus their proportional share of the tip.
